The AMD Ryzen 9 7950X processor was overclocked to over 7.2 GHz with exotic cooling, revealed a fresh leak.
How Wccftech (opens in a new tab) Reports, Tum_Apisak highlighted this on Twitter, along with CPU-Z screenshots showing the Zen 4’s 16-core flagship reaching 6.5 GHz on all its cores and 7.247 GHz on a single core. This was using liquid nitrogen cooling.
The single core high was achieved at 1.506V and we can see that overclocking to 6.5GHz on all cores required 1.465V.
As with any leak, we should of course apply our own spice, but as the CPU is clearly available and tested by a lot of people (such as reviewers and overclocking experts) before its inevitable launch – Sept. 27 – it’s not surprising see tons of leaks occurring around CPUs Zen 4.
Analysis: Next Generation Titans Clash
Of course, these are very promising starting speeds that the Ryzen 9 7950X can achieve – and we will no doubt see the flagship CPU be much faster after its launch, with overclockers having time to really tackle the CPU. (Remember that initial overclocking records are always being tweaked by experts – and we’re not yet at the time of the official 7950X release.)
Some, however, may think back to the recent leaks of Raptor Lake – next-gen Intel processors that will rival the Ryzen 7000 – and recall that the 13th-gen flagship (13900K) has already arrived, showing that it can be overclocked to the staggering 8 GHz ( not an area where Intel has long been close to overclocking potential.)
That said, it obviously doesn’t pay to be over-obsessed and focus on raw clock speeds as CPU performance is so much more – notably the improvements to the IPC (instructions to the clock) that the next generation is bringing. Don’t forget that Zen 4 is a brand new architecture that promises a big leap forward for AMD.
Indeed, a very recent leak shows that the AMD Ryzen 7950X is already breaking world records in benchmarks with standard cooling – breaking all records that use exotic cooling, no less. So what will this flagship be able to do with liquid nitrogen? seriously impressive on the performance front. But considering that Raptor Lake truly opens the eyes with overclocking across all accounts, a top-tier clash for next-gen CPUs promises to be fascinating for enthusiasts looking to squeeze the juice out of these flagships.
